Five, four, three, two, one!!! Happy New Year! It is twelve o'clock midnight. The year ends. A new year begins. Everyone thinks about the past year. They hope they are happy in the next year. Some people celebrate the start of the New Year by going to parties or restaurants on New Year's Eve. Others prefer to see the New Year in at home with their family. No one wants to be alone. Everyone waits for midnight. They drink, eat and dance. When midnight comes, people ring the bells and blow horns. They say "Happy New Year" to each other, kiss and hug. Then they sing a song. The biggest celebration of the New Year's Eve is in New York. A million people go to Times Square. Famous singers sing to the crowd. A large ball slowly comes down from a tall building. Everyone watches it. The New Year begins when the ball reaches the bottom. There is a lot of noise. People watch this on television. Many people stay awake until two or three in the morning.
Most Americans watch television on New Year's Day. In the morning they watch the Tournament of Roses Parade. Everything in the parade has flowers. After the parade, they watch college football games. New Year's Day is a time when people try to change their lives and decide to change their bad habits. Some promise to spend less money and to ear less food. Others promise to stop smoking or to take more exercise. These promises are called New Year's resolutions. But most people forget about promises.
